2019! more than 7 years and I could repeat again.

If anybody would have told me...

in Joburg Hospital I met a guy and he said he was already a year on crutches,

I thought thats unbearable....

But again :I am still alive and I am still struggeling to get back to as functional as possible!

I am having the next surgery at Wednesday the 14th of August this year ( 2019)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload::]]

I was since the accident 2012 most time not able to work , some periods I could have started again without knowing for how long or with restrictions due to pain, painkillers, not being able to walk or stand for longer periods of time.

So ,instead I am still in the legal process of going to court with the hospital that really messed it up without need and made me spent many surgeries and years that could have been spend elsewhere.

much typing and fighting, no fun rehearsing again and again.

I did master a master degree in small animal science as well, nearly, still the written thesis to be approved .

I  hope to get back to Botswana next year. I would appreciate somebody to check and repair my vetsonwheels mobile/ toyota landcruiser that is stored at Gaborone and was driven in between only for periods.

It will be a lot of work and organizing to get back to do at least some seasonal spay campaigns again.

I can hardly believe it , but I can just copy and paste last years statement

STILL and ongoing UNDER CONSTRUCTION

[[wysiwyg_imageupload::]]

Februar 2017

screwed again, screws broken

surgery April and  "groundhog day " again

crutches, slowly more weight and try to walk

I still hope to return to southern Africa to put the vets onto wheels (and not a wheelchair) again

THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE TO OPTIMISM

STILL and ongoing UNDER CONSTRUCTION

FEBRUARY 2016

I hope you did not give up on me or you thought I am busy again and do
not bother writing or getting in touch

no, sorry but I am still under construction
and I was slightly depressed about keeping anybody up to date on this 2419 2418
never ending story!
the construction site is still my own broken, and by now very very
messed up, leg
3 weeks ago I had my maybe 29th surgery
5 1/2 hours in theatre and 3 days afterwards of suffering a very bad
hangover
they cut of my shin bone from my foot again where the doctor from
hannover had it fused2420
and screwed and plate fixed it to another position more in the center
if I am lucky, and I think by now I deserve some of that, if will heal
and bone will grow to support screws and metal to carry my weight and
enable me to walk again!

I moved to frankfurt
back to frankfurt i have to say, because I used to live here from 91 to 97
and because I did live in an alternative project called wagenplatz(
trailer village)
and because I stored my truck, I did live in before I left europe, in a
old DDR hall project
I found myself a friend to help me get it activated again and drive it
to frankfurt.
so I am back in my own small house and some of my old friends are still
living here.
I got blamed for not having asked for support at least a year earlier
and I am lucky to be back into civilisation and alternative thinking!

I start a new connection to berlin vet university
by doing a master study called master of small animal science
and i am looking forward to that
it is structured for vets in practice and is mainly e-learning and home
study
interrupted by presence weekends and examinations in vet department

so if this time my leg is going to heal and i am going to walk
i can start planning getting back and continue vetsonwheels somehow
that would be great!!!

hope you are happy and enjoy every step you take

November 2014

I miss  walking and working very very badly and my mental health is down down down!

I was told vets on wheels clinic car is electric disabled eaten by rats and I have the choice to pay a lot or to give up !

I am still hobbeling around in Germany with my last fancy modell of a fixateur externe. Since end of April. The doctor and his supervising professor who signed responsible for my last 6 surgeries, a year of treatment and big plans and big promises disappeared after attaching the last fixateur extremely unsound. Doctor to Kanada and prof unknown. I had to start odysee through German speciallized clinics again to find a surgeon who is willing to take over and to cope with the original problem and all the newly created bullshit I got from Hannover!2412 2416

-My foot is now standing beside the leg axis, bonded to the bone at the outside instead of middle. I advised the doc while it was still abundand time to avoid and fix the problem, but he insisted that the leg will become more straight than the healthy one and is in controll.2407

-10cm down my knee there is a still the defect in my shin bone he tried to fix with a plate. The actual fixatuer is not aiming both bone tips in line and the space in between seems patchy and not solid .2408

2410

Most specialist agreed first the shin bone needs to be fixed!

Later (more years) take care of foot wrong position and differnce in leg lenght AGAIN!

Maybe I found a surgeon nearby , so I do not need to be driven or drive more than 1000km to see him. We tried screwing my fixatuer together and appart to stimulate the kallus and end of November latest x-rays will decide to either take the fixateur of or to cut the defect bone part out again and start another osteosynthesis trial!

April 2014

Surgery. Not unexpected this time. I told my doc since some weeks that there is puss above my surgery scar coming out of a small small hole. First he did not want to believe and than he did not want to operate again because I think he resignated and realized the mistakes he made and he had to great ideas and ne ambition any more.I had 2 surgeries and I ended up with another fixateur and massive long bad situated scars. If these scars to don heal I will have real real trouble and next problem will become the bone healing.

2411 2417

February 2014

2404 I got unexpected surgery again. Illizaroc fixateur of and plate with bone marrow(and hamster ovaries) inside again, because the new grown bone got to thin and broke off inside.so walking with 15kg weight on leg on crutches for the next 6 weeks until next x-ray!

                       2405

JANUARY 2014

I know that it is hard to believe, but I am still under construction and still on crutches with another fancy high tech sci fi like arrangement of metal on my leg hopping for recovery

2403 This construction is called Illizarow fixateur.

I got it in May and it was meant to stretch my legbone, that was perforated and broken close to the knee for that procedure, to substitute the missing 11cm that I lost since my accident (due to surgeries, infection and unfortunate circumstances).

I finished the daily stretching last October and the newgrown rubbery bone is expected to be solid in approximately next October!

FEBRUARY 2013

I start to have (unfortunately not to do) surgery again

Next Fixateur, next hospital (getting more and more specialized) and if the next samples taken last surgery(Monday 11th)are not next germs I will have next bone marrow transplant end of this month.

DECEMBER 2012

A nightmare came true and my suspicion that the plate is pushing through my skin flap was verified. The X ray shows that the long screw in my distal tibia fragment is broken and the small ones are floating in the big nowhere within my ancle.

I am frustrated devasteted and out of words! Emergency CT is my doctors idea after I arrived in Giessen (500km driving with that leg !!!) and I wonder if there are many more plans to make and a way to minimize that damage!

2361

SEPTEMEBER 2012

12the surgery to adapt the skin flap and all samples and PCR are nagativ! Looks like ther is a very good chance for my tibia now!Thats a start!!

AUGUST 2012

Last monday, 27.of August I had  my 11th surgery !
long surgery all day drug clouded
woke up and had no fixateur any more and only one hip bandaged
but that hip, where doc mined bone marrow for replacement for my leg bone, hurts more than anything else!
OP with very good result (see X rays)
unfortunately in new sample new germ found, but name seems so exotic that they expect it to be harmless
next complication is my skin flap that has now more tension to cover and only a metal plate as underground to survive!
me and this very dedicated surgeon (who made the flap and the last surgery)

hope for good luck and best healing!!2341

JUNE

Increasing frustration! System hospital seems to be to massive to keep communication and feasibility under control! Once sucked into the system they add insult to injury, wounds are getting bigger and damage increases really fast!!

I had 9 surgeries so far , the hole in my leg had an impressive size when they needed surgery with risky outcome to cut a flap skin graft to cover the defect. Now I have to sit around and wait until that is healed in to be cut open again to allow proper bone reconsructive surgery. They cut away so much of my bone because of infection and poor blood perfusion already that I worry about the outcome!I can only assure that in my performance as a vet I follow more sensible steps from the beginningand I would have avoided most of the bullshit I have to endure now!!!

END OF MAY 2012

I had fights with the South African surgeon about his antibiotic protocol and I did not like his wound closure, but I was not in a position to enforce my point of view!
At least I could convince my insurance to take me serious and fly me back to Germany!
It took another month of hoping and wishfool thinking to confirm my concerns!
Since 9th of May I live in hospital in Giessen, Germany.
They took all my metal plates and screws out again. No bone healing occured yet because I carry a Bacillus cereus in my leg and I got another fixateur extern to stop my bone fragments from piercing through my skin and plasters again.
I am getting matched antibiotics into my central venous catheder every day for hours and I will have my 7th (not last) surgery next Tuesday the 29th of May.

20th of March

Just before the Sterilization Vaccination campaign ,on the way to I had a very bad accident in Zutshwa (near Hukuntsi near Kang in Botswana)!
My right leg bones (tibia and fibula) both broken into several pieces and unfortunately piercing their way out of my leg!
I survived nicely a  90 km sandy road trip with Derek driving high speed and in Hukuntsi hospital where a Kongo doc stitched the severe bleeding without local anaesthesia and poor choice of suture and sterility standarts that made me feel being very fussy in my own surgery!
I have been flown to Johannesburg for 2 surgeries and my insurance company sent a doctor to fly to Germany with me tomorrow for further surgeries!
It seems that I will need some months to get up on my own feet again ( I will be the happiest person in the world , if/when I can run again)

I wish to appologise for my sudden disappearance, my very aprupt change of plans, for all appointments not kept and all friends I wanted to visit postponed and all animals I wanted to sterilize not sterilized.
I have been unable to leave the hospital or to access internet since my accident!
I had no cell phone first time in hospital, furthermore now I have very poor cell phone reception and I do not have most numbers of people I would have liked to contact!
I really hope I can come back in October and continue everything I started and planned!

4th March

I lost the tension spanner from fan belt and bought a panty hose from a woman at the road! Now VOW is still mobile due to a panty hose and it really works!!!

Beginning of March

I spent the previous half month in Maun just typing and discussing and getting frustrated by committees! But I guess it needs to be done!

Tomorrow 4th of March I will drive with Lazarus from MAws to Ghanzi to perform a sterilizatin campaign for the Cheetah Conservation Botswana around the wildlife frequented farming area in the west of Botswana.

At the 21st of March I will be meeting with Corinne from comanis and K'AA project west from Hukuntsi ,the former Kalahari Gemsbock park area in the South West to organise a sterilisation campaign .

I do not expect any network or internet , subsequently i promise pictures afterwards!

Since 11th of February

Andrea working with MAWS and their volunteer team from their Maun clinic.
A lot of clinic ( not more than 20 dogs sterilized a day) and little outreach.
Makalamabedi 15th of february 30 dogs!

Shorobe 18th of february 22 animals! It is a shame to have akeen ,fast and great team and not much demand!Frustrated vets realize the importance of preparations and the limitations if dog owners do not cooperate!

FEBRUARY 7 th

We sterilized 8 dogs in Ruretse and after packing we went via Rhino Sanctuary back to Maun!

Richard is back in the clinic doing surgery.
Andrea is busy with basic ground work. Stock counts, inventory clinic boxes, paper work and fixing the car are urgent requirements to be done nownow! Mayor ongoing logistic challenge is always to keep track what to order where ,what to stock where and how to keep cool what needs to be cool!

BEGINNING FEBRUARY 2012

1881 Yesterday ,the 1st of February 2012 we started at the BSPCA in Gaborone. We sterilised 21 dogs and thats something because it is very very hot this and not a pleasant place to work neither.

Today we arrived in the morning ,already one hour later than announced to give our asigned helper time to clean the floor at least. Nothing was changed since we left , only the smell of carcasses got worse and when we realized it came out of the freezer we were supposed to use as additional table for our surgery, because it was stuffed so much with dead dogs that it could not close in spite of the big stone on top of the lit!

I am sorry , but I have got my limits! We packed and left!

FINAL END JANUARY 2012

Last 10 days of January we went to RSA to sort Richards passport and because I felt bad about a foreigner alone and for the first time in Joburg we did some sightseeing. To make the most out of a long drive we sterilized (10 days between embassy and back to Botswana) 169 animals at FORA and 2 lionesses at Great Cats of SA.

END JANUARY 2012

Since the 20th of january VOW is helping out FORA in Johannesburg.Friends of rescued animals is the home for more than 800 dogs and many cats near Johannesburg and they adopt every months more than 100 animals out (that justifies the effort ).They are left without a vet since 10 days.

VOW sterilized 55 animals so far .Yesterday we had only massive ,over 40 kg fat bitches and that slows numbers down and makes me happy for minimizing the Boerbullbreeding !!!

Conditions are less than nice at FORA and we will leave back to Botswana as soon as we have sterilized the shelter!

Arrangements are already made to help the BSPCA in Gaborone and Ruretse dogs !

JANUARY 2012

Kasane / Kazungula spay campaign January 2012

starting Monday the 9th of january 2012 until Saturday the 14th,

we neutered 191 animals (86 female dogs of 173 dogs and 10 female cats of 18 cats)

and we vaccinated 242 animals against distemper, parvo, hepatitis, kennelcough and influenza.

The absolut amazing spay team was Andrea the German VOW vet with Richard the Australien MAWS volunteer vet, Lazarus the Motswana vet tech, Ester, Haze, Marie clinic help and Kathy and Bettina  feeding and watering the team !

The demand in both locations, being the Kgotla of Kasane and the Kgotla of Kazungula was overwhelming and could due to thunderstorms not successfully satisfied. The people from both neighbourhoods are familiar with sterilisation campaigns since 2008 and are welcoming spectators and increasingly aware dog owners who realize the improvement of their animals conditions after treatment.

The team opened their mobile surgery at the alternating Kgotlas every morning and performed their open-air theatrics, displaying their veterinary skills to an appreciative audience. Besides being castrated or spayed, the dogs were also treated against worms and external parasites. After sleeping off the effects of the anaesthetic for about an hour most patients were in a fit state to make their own way home, although many were carted off by their owners in private cars, taxis and even wheelbarrows.
