According to Transparency International, Botswana is the least corrupt country in Africa. It has a very strong tradition as a representative democracy and is home to most of the world's San (bushman) population.

70% of Botswana's surface is dominated by the Kalahari Desert. Within this semi arid desert the Okavango River empties onto the world's largest inland delta forming a crucial ecosystem to the survival of estimated 200,000 large mammals. Notably the endangered African Wild Dog still survives within the Okavango Delta, exhibiting one of the richest pack densities in Africa.

August 2011 already 17% of the land area of Botswana was occupied by three national parks and seven game reserves. Now Botswana became the heartland of the second biggest conservation area worldwide. The KAZA covers with 444.000 square kilometers approximately 20 % more surface than Germany and incorporates notable sites such as Chobe National Park, Hwange National Park, the Okavango Delta and the Victoria Falls. The German Federal Ministry of economic cooperation and development (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung) supports this peace park project with approximately 20.000.000 Euro subsidies by the KfW development bank (KfW Entwicklungsbank).

The Chobe National Park with its four ecosystems known for its largest wildlife concentration in Africa, extends over an area of 10,566 square kilometers connecting with one of the biggest and wildlife richest semi-forested wetlands of Africa, the Okavango Delta. This expands within the semi arid Kalahari which hosts the world's second largest protected area the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. In the southern Kalahari Desert the first cross border conservation area Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP) exists since May 2000.
