Vets on Wheels

31 Vets on WheelsHumans once belonged to the world, but we've moved away and now we are destroying it. I believe that each of us can do something to make a difference - our every positive thought and action creates a ripple effect.

D'kar a village between Ghanzi and Sehitwa! I had to be fast because Lazarus my amazing vet technician needed to catch the bus to be at a funeral in Maunearly next morning!
And we had to stop at 18 dogs as a limit for budget forCheetah Conservation! We did 17 (because one escaped and could not be replaced) of them only 2 males and of the 15 females 2 being late pregnant (see photo!!)We started at 8.30 and finished at 13.10 and I would have stopped getting refunding for the drugs and materials used and spayed on if Lazarus would have been under no time pressure!Such a great atmosphere and friendly people!I ovarhyserectomized a very young doggi with the owner very concerned third and she walked around her owner ,tail wagging when I did the tenth! That is so so nice!!!

4th March

I lost the tension spanner from fan belt and bought a panty hose from a woman at the road! Now VOW is still mobile due to a panty hose and it really works!!!

Beginning of March

I spent the previous half month in Maun just typing and discussing and getting frustrated by committees! But I guess it needs to be done!

Tomorrow 4th of March I will drive with Lazarus from MAws to Ghanzi to perform a sterilizatin campaign for the Cheetah Conservation Botswana around the wildlife frequented farming area in the west of Botswana.

At the 21st of March I will be meeting with Corinne from comanis and K'AA project west from Hukuntsi ,the former Kalahari Gemsbock park area in the South West to organise a sterilisation campaign .

I do not expect any network or internet , subsequently i promise pictures afterwards!

Since 11th of February

Andrea working with MAWS and their volunteer team from their Maun clinic.
A lot of clinic ( not more than 20 dogs sterilized a day) and little outreach.
Makalamabedi 15th of february 30 dogs!

Shorobe 18th of february 22 animals! It is a shame to have akeen ,fast and great team and not much demand!Frustrated vets realize the importance of preparations and the limitations if dog owners do not cooperate!

FEBRUARY 7 th

We sterilized 8 dogs in Ruretse and after packing we went via Rhino Sanctuary back to Maun!

Richard is back in the clinic doing surgery.
Andrea is busy with basic ground work. Stock counts, inventory clinic boxes, paper work and fixing the car are urgent requirements to be done nownow! Mayor ongoing logistic challenge is always to keep track what to order where ,what to stock where and how to keep cool what needs to be cool!

BEGINNING FEBRUARY 2012

1881 Yesterday ,the 1st of February 2012 we started at the BSPCA in Gaborone. We sterilised 21 dogs and thats something because it is very very hot this and not a pleasant place to work neither.

Today we arrived in the morning ,already one hour later than announced to give our asigned helper time to clean the floor at least. Nothing was changed since we left , only the smell of carcasses got worse and when we realized it came out of the freezer we were supposed to use as additional table for our surgery, because it was stuffed so much with dead dogs that it could not close in spite of the big stone on top of the lit!

I am sorry , but I have got my limits! We packed and left!

FINAL END JANUARY 2012

Last 10 days of January we went to RSA to sort Richards passport and because I felt bad about a foreigner alone and for the first time in Joburg we did some sightseeing. To make the most out of a long drive we sterilized (10 days between embassy and back to Botswana) 169 animals at FORA and 2 lionesses at Great Cats of SA.

END JANUARY 2012

Since the 20th of january VOW is helping out FORA in Johannesburg.Friends of rescued animals is the home for more than 800 dogs and many cats near Johannesburg and they adopt every months more than 100 animals out (that justifies the effort ).They are left without a vet since 10 days.

VOW sterilized 55 animals so far .Yesterday we had only massive ,over 40 kg fat bitches and that slows numbers down and makes me happy for minimizing the Boerbullbreeding !!!

Conditions are less than nice at FORA and we will leave back to Botswana as soon as we have sterilized the shelter!

Arrangements are already made to help the BSPCA in Gaborone and Ruretse dogs !

JANUARY 2012

Kasane / Kazungula spay campaign January 2012

starting Monday the 9th of january 2012 until Saturday the 14th,

we neutered 191 animals (86 female dogs of 173 dogs and 10 female cats of 18 cats)

and we vaccinated 242 animals against distemper, parvo, hepatitis, kennelcough and influenza.

The absolut amazing spay team was Andrea the German VOW vet with Richard the Australien MAWS volunteer vet, Lazarus the Motswana vet tech, Ester, Haze, Marie clinic help and Kathy and Bettina  feeding and watering the team !

The demand in both locations, being the Kgotla of Kasane and the Kgotla of Kazungula was overwhelming and could due to thunderstorms not successfully satisfied. The people from both neighbourhoods are familiar with sterilisation campaigns since 2008 and are welcoming spectators and increasingly aware dog owners who realize the improvement of their animals conditions after treatment.

The team opened their mobile surgery at the alternating Kgotlas every morning and performed their open-air theatrics, displaying their veterinary skills to an appreciative audience. Besides being castrated or spayed, the dogs were also treated against worms and external parasites. After sleeping off the effects of the anaesthetic for about an hour most patients were in a fit state to make their own way home, although many were carted off by their owners in private cars, taxis and even wheelbarrows.
